                      Hiwi the kiwi
14.5.18

Today at school in the hall Hiwi the kiwi came to our school
to talk to us about the ocean and to pick up any rubbish
that you see on beaches, rivers, lakes and well the ocean.
This is because fish and birds think that plastic is fish so birds and
other fish will eat the plastic and the plastic will block
the other food causing the fish or bird to die.

He also taught us that it is important to wear life jackets to
keep safe because he told us a story about a girl and her
dad on a boat one day and the girl had her life jacket on
but the dad didn’t so while they were on the boat they
didn’t see the log so they crashed and they both fell off
but the boat kept going but the girl survived but saddly
the dad died because his life jacket was on the boat but they
did find the girl.

He also told us that when you go fishing and you get a fish pick it
up with a wet towel so none of the scales come off and
also because the fish have this kind of sunscreen on them so if
you rub it off and then put it back in the sea then it will die.
You also need to measure it and if it is 30 cm long then its
perfect but if it’s less than 30 cm then you have to carefully
put it back in the water and if it’s bigger than 30 cm then you
have to put it back because it might have babies in it so
you need to give it a chance to grow.
